Fred Smith
Front Ensemble Arranger
Fred Emory Smith was destined to lead a life as a musician and composer.  He began studying piano at the age of four. By the time he was eight, he had won Yamaha’s National Piano Composition Competition.  While in high school, Fred entered the Young Musicians Competition and received first place for a marimba concerto, earning the Clotilde Otranto Award.  As a result of winning, he performed Ney Rosauro’s Concerto No. 1 for Marimba with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. Fred was trained at Berklee College of Music, where he received the Doug Timm Award for Outstanding Musicianship in Film Scoring.
Fred’s drum corps experience included performing as a snare drummer with The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps in 2001, the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets in 2002, and the Santa Clara Vanguard from 2003 through 2005. Fred’s teaching credentials includes working with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps, The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. 

Fred has extensive experience composing and arranging for various high school marching bands and indoor drumlines, as well as independent Winter Guard International percussion ensembles. Fred has been arranging percussion for the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets since 2013, where they have won four Open Class Championships.  He is also the front ensemble arranger for Vessel Drum and Bugle Corps, the sound designer for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps, and works with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps as their sound designer, including the 2019 season where they won Drum Corps International World Class Championships.     
Outside of the marching arts, Fred is an award-winning composer working in various media genres.  Now having considerable experience working on many different films, TV shows, and video games, some of Fred’s work includes Transformers 3, Need for Speed: The Run, Disney’s Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, Marvel’s Agents of Shield, Starz’s Outlanders, and CW’s Supergirl. Fred has composed the music for two HBO TV shows: Grace and Halfwords, winning Best Music Composition for Halfworlds in the 2017 Apollo Awards.  Another big accomplishment was to work as a music arranger for the 87th Academy Awards.  Recently, he won Best Feature Film Music at the 2019 Burbank Film Festival for his feature film, Rock ‘n’ Roll Eddie. His current projects include working on the animated series Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures for Lucasfilm and a new thriller feature film entitled The Book of Judah.
 
Fred resides in Huntington Beach, California with his wife Sasha and children: Freddie and Briar.
